Like a Contented Child

I was sitting on the couch having a few moments with Jesus before the day got into full swing. The house had the hush of sleeping children and the only sound was the soft swish of one pair of bare feet on the hardwood floor.  I looked up as my eight year old entered the room. We both smiled. He came over, got in my lap and rested his head on my shoulder. No words needed. He didn’t ask for anything. He didn’t even try to draw my attention from what I was doing.  He just wanted to be near me… Ahhh… mama bliss.

And Psalm 131 went through my mind again.  “Like a contented child who rests on its mother’s lap.”  This Psalm had already been speaking to me over the last few weeks and then God gave me this beautiful, tangible illustration with my own child.

Lord, my heart is meek before you. I don’t consider myself better than others. I’m content to not pursue matters that are over my head—such as your complex mysteries and wonders— that I’m not yet ready to understand.

I am humbled and quieted in your presence. Like a contented child who rests on its mother’s lap, I’m your resting child and my soul is content in you.

O people of God, your time has come to quietly trust, waiting upon the Lord now and forever.

Psalm 131 (TPT)

Oh, how often I come to God with my own agenda!  Even if it’s a good one! I come to him because I want something from him, guidance, understanding, help… I do want to go to him for all those things.  But how often do I just want to be near Him? Just want to enjoy his presence? How often do I approach him with no words of my own, and requiring no words from Him?  Not as often as I should, that’s for sure.

That seems especially difficult when there is so much I still don’t understand, so much “that I’m not yet ready to understand.” And yet He has given me this beautiful reminder, both in His Word and my life, that I can trust without understanding. I can come incredibly boldly and yet still so humbly and crawl into the lap of my Savior.  And the most amazing part of it all is that while I am so blessed by His nearnes, He is somehow blessed by mine.
